Kim Robertson, Celtic harpist, in concert on Nov. 13

The Royal Oak Pub, 6280 Vicksburg Rd., Rockford, will again present a concert by Kim Robertson at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13. The concert, sponsored by Rock River Friends of Folk Music, is open to all. Admission is $7 for Rock River Friends of Folk Music and $10 for others.

Regarded as one of the finest Celtic harp players, Robertson has now added her beautiful voice to the musical magic of her performances. Her untraditional approach started when she began playing the Celtic harp as an adult. She has not only mastered it, but also become one of the most spellbinding innovators of the Celtic harp genre.

Soon after discovering the Celtic harp, Robertson embarked on her career with the instrument—a journey that has taken her far from her native Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Armed with her lap harp and dressed in a tuxedo, Robertson once delivered singing telegrams in Minneapolis, entertained on luxury cruise ships, played grassroots folk clubs, and appeared as herself and performed on an episode of Beverly Hills 90210. And, yet, she is no stranger to concert and festival stages, performing at hundreds in both the U.S. and Europe.

Robertson’s approach to performance is also distinctly non-traditional and unexpected. Her passion for improvisation allows unparalleled musical freedom in her performances. The joy for Robertson lies not in trying to perfect a piece, but in the journey toward mastery—“I view my performances as works in progress, always changing and evolving. I feel and hear the performance and go from there. Playing by ear changed my whole outlook on written music. It now becomes a canvas on which to paint a landscape.” Blending the classic and contemporary, the established and the revolutionary, with instrument and voice, she puts a modern edge to a centuries-old instrument.
