Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center presents Les Amies, The Friends, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27, at Second Congregational Church, 318 N. Church St., Rockford.
This ensemble of principal players from the New York Philharmonic are longtime colleagues and include Nancy Allan, harp; Cynthia Phelps, viola; and Carol Wincenc, internationally renowned flutist. The group has come together to form one of the most exciting and dynamic groups on the music scene.
The ensemble explores a range of repertoire rich in color, texture and imagination. Each of these artists is top in her field, and has appeared as soloist with symphonies including Chicago, New York, London, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Minnesota and Hong Kong, as well as the chamber orchestras of England, St. Paul, Los Angeles and Orpheus.
The group has commissioned works by many composers, including but not limited to, Lucas Foss, Peter Shickele, Stephen Paulus and Jan Bach. The later is a local composer and retired professor from Northern Illinois University who taught music theory and composition.
Les Amies will perform pieces by Jan Bach, Mozart and many more.
