Hello, sports and recreation fans. My name is Doug Halberstadt, and Im the new guy on staff here at The Rock River Times. Ive been given the opportunity of bringing a sports presence back to this paper.
My qualifications for writing about sports include a degree in broadcast journalism from Bradley University in Peoria. Ive co-hosted a sports talk show on a local radio station. During the past high school football season, I was the sideline reporter for the Boylan High School broadcasts on another local radio station. Starting in April, I will begin my third season as the track announcer at the Rockford Speedway. But first and foremost, Im a fan! Exactly like many of you who will read this, I love sports, all types of sports.
It will be my intention to not only cover the obvious stories in the world of the mainstream games, but also the ones that might not always get the attention they deserve. I intend to write about local and national motor sports. Ive been given permission to write about any other recreational or sporting activities I think would make fun and compelling stories. This is where you, the reader, can play a huge part in what will appear here each week. Im open to any ideas you have about your dart league, or your karate club, or fishing tournament. Maybe youre the national bocce ball champ, and no one knows except for the people in your league. Well, my goal is to change that.
If youll keep me informed about any sporting or recreational events youd like to see covered, Ill give it my best to see it gets some ink here. I look forward to meeting you at the rink, or on the course, or at the track, or out on the lake, or for, that matter, anywhere people come together to spend what I think is their most precious of resources, their free time.
I encourage you to contact me in a variety of ways. My e-mail is Dougster61@aol.com. My office phone number is 815-962-2648. You can always leave a message for me here at the paper at 815-964-9767. Or, if you do happen to see me out and about, dont hesitate to come up and say hi and tell me how I should do a story about your son or daughters fencing class. This is what I hope we can utilize this space for. I want to provide a service that you may not be able to get in any other media outlet. Im sure I wont be able to do it without the help of you, the reader. So lets get busy and let the games begin!
