January was a good month for two local sports figures.
Rockford Lightning Head Coach Chris Daleo collected his second Coach of the Month honors from the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). He first received the award in November 2005. Daleo earned the honor again last month for guiding his team to first place in the Eastern Conference and an overall record of 10-2 during January. He also had the head coaching duties for the Eastern Conference squad during the CBA All-Star game Jan. 17.
This is Daleos fourth Coach of the Month Award during his stint as the Lightnings leader. He was also honored with the CBAs Coach of the Year award in 2003.
The Lightning play at home next Tuesday night, Feb. 14, against the Gary Steelheads. Game time is 7:05 p.m. During the Valentines Day contest, one lucky fan will go home with a diamond courtesy of the Lightning and B. Sanfield.
In the United Hockey League (UHL), Rockford IceHogs goalie Michel Robinson was named Goalie of the Month. During January, while Robinson was in goal, the IceHogs were unbeaten. Robinson currently leads the UHL with a .925 save percentage. He was even better during January with a .931 save percentage. His seasons goals against average is 2.36. His Januarys goals against average was slightly better at 2.17. He is also riding an 11-game unbeaten streak.
The Hogs next home game is this Friday night, Feb. 10, vs. their arch rival, the Quad City Mallards. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m. The world famous Zooperstars will make their Rockford debut during the game.
