Literacy Council offers tutor training workshops

This year, you can help another adult discover the joy of reading—there’s still time to become a volunteer literacy tutor!

The Literacy Council is offering two tutor training workshops at the Council office, 982 N. Main St., Rockford, on the following days in February and March:

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Feb. 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and

Tuesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 27 and March 1, 6, 8, 13 from 6 to 9 p.m.

In a workshop series, volunteers learn techniques for teaching reading to adults. Registration is required at least one week before a session begins. After completing the free training, tutors are matched with a student for one-on-one instruction an hour or two each week at a variety of convenient locations.

The Council also has other volunteer opportunities, including test scoring, reading, English or math classroom aides, library helpers, computer instructors, office help and grounds maintenance.
