Literacy Council offers tutor training

Help another adult discover the joy of reading—become a volunteer literacy tutor!

The Literacy Council is offering a tutor training workshop at the Council office, 982 N. Main St., Rockford, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the following days in August: Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Aug. 20, 22, 24, 27, 29.

In a workshop series, volunteers learn techniques for teaching reading to adults. Registration is required at least one week before a session begins. After completing the free training, tutors are matched with a student for one-on-one instruction an hour or two each week at a variety of convenient locations.

The Council also has other volunteer opportunities, including test scoring, reading, English or math classroom aides, library helpers, computer instructors, office help and grounds maintenance.
