Literary Hook: A poem with a quirky narrative and surprise ending

Here is an honorable mention from the Rock River Poetry and Prose Contest. The poet, Melissa Wangall, has published poems in Rock Valley College’s Voices literary magazine, and her articles have sometimes appeared in The Rock River Times. She lives in Poplar Grove. We liked this poem for its surprise ending, as well as its quirky narrative. Fact or fantasy—you decide!

by Melissa Wangall

For some reason I rang my own doorbell.

To my surprise,

Someone answered.

It was a man,

Who wondered

Who I was.

I told him he needed to leave,

And he threatened me

With the police.

I pushed past him and up the stairs.

He grabbed me,

Skinning my knees.

Took hold of my arm,

Looked me in the eye,

And kissed me.
