Literary Hook: ‘Indulge your inner writer’ at The Clearing in Wisconsin

As you may know, “Literary Hook” is focusing on opportunities for writers at The Clearing in Ellison Bay (Door County), Wis.

Perhaps the most well-known writer workshop offered at The Clearing is “Writing Workshops with Norbert Blei.”

For at least two decades, these workshops have attracted beginning and seasoned writers. In fact, it was this workshop that really launched my own writing career, and my first chapbook (funded by the Rockford Writers’ Theater, which was headed by our own Frank Schier) was “named” by Norbert Blei, who took a phrase from one of my poems, “Tonight on this Late Road.” So, I can recommend this workshop with the highest regards.

The description of the workshop is best accessed at, and is very detailed. However, following is a glimpse at Nobert Blei’s “vision” of this year’s workshop.

To quote from The Clearing’s “Summer Catalog”: “The 2007 writing workshop reflects my continued interest in addressing certain areas essential to serious writing that I have found worthy of exploration as a poet, short story writer, essayist, novelist and journalist. This is an invitation to new and former students of the workshop to participate in this year’s experience of getting back to or getting into the daily process of writing, literary study, class discussion, challenging assignments and the individual pursuit of works-in-progress. …”

The workshops are divided into:

1. Beginning/Begin again Workshop with Norbert Blei and assistant Susan O’Leary

2. Advanced Writing Workshop with Norbert Blei

The workshops will be June 17-23. Rates include room and board with a few slots for commuters. Access or call toll-free 877-854-3225 to register or for more information. Indulge your inner writer!
