Strophes, the newsletter of the National Federation of Poetry Societies, has an extensive listing of forthcoming contests. The next two issues of Literary Hook will list them. Contests are a way for writers to receive praise and monetary awards for their work. Both beginning and seasoned writers enter these contests. Awards usually include a monetary prize as well as publication.
Here are a few contests you poets might like to enter:
Poets Club of Chicago, annual Helen Schaible Sonnet Contest. Deadline Sept. 1. One entry only. Must be unpublished. Either Shakespearean or Petrarchan. Missouri State Poetry Societys Summer Contest: Deadline postmark Sept. 1. Two copies, only one with name & address of poet; 40-line limit; 5 categories: (1) rhymed verse or blank verse, (2) free verse, (3) humorous verse, (4) any form, summer subject, (5) any form, any subject. Fees: non-members $1/poem, members $1/two poemssame category. For winners list: SASE or name and e-mail address on 3 x 5 index. Entries to Janice Kroll, 4018 S. Poets Forum Magazines Madeline Eastlund Gencorelli Memorial Award: Subject: Relationships (family). Form: Any. 24-36 lines. $25, $15. Deadline: Oct. 15. Must not have been published or under consideration for publication. Entry fee: $2 per poem or 3/$5, check payable: Madelyn Eastlulnd (or disqualified).
