Literary Hook: The Clearing offers ‘The Process of Writing’ May 20-26

Last week, we began looking at opportunities for writers at The Clearing, in Ellison Bay, Wis.

Door County is a favorite vacation spot for Rockfordians; The Clearing offers seminars and classes in a beautiful and nurturing environment.

“The Process of Writing: Focus on Poetry and Short Prose” will be May 20-26. This class will include a balance of discussion, writing prompts, time to write, sharing and critique. You will be invited to engage in discussions that examine the creative process, motivation, and ideas for writing, the pros and cons of critiquing, how to get the most out of writing circles and groups, the preparation and protocol of public readings, and how writers can engage creatively in the communities in which they live.

In addition, you will find opportunities and outlets for marketing short prose and poetry, find places to publish, and establish relationships with editors.

You will also write! A balance of poetry, memoir, essay and short fiction prompts will be provided. You will be given plenty of time to write in the solitude and quiet of The Clearing’s beautiful environment, as well as in a supportive, enthusiastic group setting. The week will culminate in a supportive reading of work generated both at The Bridge bookstore/coffeehouse in Egg Harbor, and during the final evening at The Clearing.

Packages include room, board and tuition or commuter fares, and vary depending on which you choose. To register or for more information, access The Clearing at or call toll-free at 877-854-3225.

Christine Swanberg is a local author and poet who has written several books of poetry and formerly wrote a column called “The Writer’s Garret” for this newspaper.
