Literary Hook: ‘The Poetry of Place’ May 27-June 2 at The Clearing

For the last two weeks, we have been looking at the wonderful offerings for writers at The Clearing in Door County, Wisconsin—a favorite vacation spot for many Rockfordians. In keeping the promise to give more details regarding workshops, this week’s column will focus on “The Poetry of Place,” to be May 27-June 2.

To quote directly from this year’s brochure:

“Don’t write poetry of place? Think again. Every poem has its setting. Come live the poet’s life, writing new work, revising old work, developing manuscripts. This year’s class will emphasize place in poetry: the landscapes, people and history of a place that speaks to you. The class will meet as a workshop in the mornings to hear what you’re working on and to read poems of place. In the afternoons, you will have writing exercises and time to write new work. The instructors will also meet with you individually. Bring your notebook, computer, along with poems on which you are working. Also, bring up to three poems to discuss in conference and a favorite poem by another poet for Sunday night introductions.”

The workshop is taught by Judith Strasser and Robin Chapman. For more information about the leaders, The Clearing, registration, accommodations and fees, access or call toll-free 877-854-3225.

Christine Swanberg is a local author and poet who has written several books of poetry and formerly wrote a column called “The Writer’s Garret” for this newspaper.
