Literary Hook: Workshop led by Ellen Kort—‘a poet in every way’

In our continuing look at opportunities for writers at The Clearing in Door County, Wisconsin, here is a workshop sure to be exciting: “Exapanding the Reach of Poetry,” facilitated by former Wisconsin Poet Laureate Ellen Kort.

Some of you may have heard Ellen Kort read during “A River Runs Through Us,” a writers’ conference initiated by Womanspace. Not only was Ellen our keynote speaker, but also a wonderful workshop leader. I had the privilege of hosting her stay at my home. We became quite good friends, and I must say she is the real thing—a poet in every way: soulful, thoughtful, adventurous, bold and talented. If you want to work with a stellar poet and presence, consider attending Ellen’s workshop at The Clearing, July 15-21.

Ellen shares her vision of this week-long workshop in The Clearing “Summer Catalog”: “The idea is to break through old habits and complacencies and to welcome unique opportunities to push forward. It will be a class marked with lively, enthusiastic and far-reaching expressions of thought, feeling and fresh imagery. You will read in celebration of poetry as a human energy system, and will write for the pure joy of creative expression. …”

Christine Swanberg is a local author and poet who has written several books of poetry and formerly wrote a column called “The Writer’s Garret” for this newspaper.
