Local groups join forces

Winnebago County Taxpayers Association (WCTA) and the Libertarian Party have joined R.E.A.C.H. in effort to force District 205 to place a backdoor referendum on the ballot.

If District 205 uses a backdoor referendum to pay back tax protester refunds, WCTA and the Libertarian Party will join R.E.A.CH. to spearhead a petition drive to force the district to place it before the voters in the spring. A backdoor referendum would allow District 205 to raise Rockford’s taxes without voter approval. It is unbelievable that after the voters supported two referendums to help District 205’s financial crisis that the district would pay Rockford’s citizens back this way.

These groups, which have a combined membership of more than 1000 individuals, want to send a very clear message to the District 205 administration and new board majority that the community doesn’t want a backdoor referendum. These groups realize that the district will simply be wasting precious tax dollars on interest payments to pay for the bonds and on attorneys’ fees because they will have started a new legal battle. Attorney Michael O’Brien will help with the petition drive as well as provide expert legal advice to make sure the drive is done correctly.

In less than a week after R.E.A.CH.’s unanimous vote, Sen. Dave Syverson, Ald. Doug Mark, School board members, Ted Biondo, Patti Delugas, Stephanie Caltagerone and David Strommer have offered support. Former school board member Bill Neblock has also pledged support. Local businesses such as The Rock River Times, Answer USA and other individuals have also offered to distribute petitions and collect signatures.

To get involved, call 749-1900 and leave a message. A volunteer from R.E.A.CH. will get back to you.
