Local musician turns 90

Birthday party for Rockford Jazz Society member John Porazzo set for Jan. 23 at Lino’s Restaurant

Rockford Jazz Society member John Porazzo will turn 90 Jan. 27, and in celebration of that fact, a birthday party will be held Sunday, Jan. 23 at Lino’s Restaurant. Porazzo is an extremely well-respected guitarist and guitar maker, and according to his daughter Betty Ann Manalli, every musician in town will be in attendance at this event.

No presents are to be brought, just “presence,” and musicians are strongly encouraged to bring their instruments for a jam session. According to Rockford native (now well-known Chicago composer and upright bass player who used to sit in on gigs with Porazzo and Ken Stein) Matt Ulery: “John is beautiful. I love him.”

The party begins at 5 p.m., and is open to the public. Giving honor when honor is due is important for local musicians, especially when they’ve been doing it for so long (and still playing strong!). For any information, contact Manalli at 397-4149.
