Local skaters earn medals at Chicago invitational
With the unseasonably warm weather the northern Illinois area has had the last few days, it is hard to imagine several area ice skaters were able to compete recently at the Greater Chicago Fall Ice Skating Invitational in Northbrook, Ill. Not only did they compete, they did very well, and managed to bring home several medals.
Taylor Ritchie won the Pre-Preliminary LTD Compulsory Moves Group D competition and the Pre-Preliminary Ladies LTD Free Group Skate E competition. Delaney Anderson brought back a first-place medal in the Pre-Preliminary Ladies LTD Free Skate Group F event, and she placed third in the Pre-Preliminary LTD Compulsory Moves Group D competition. Hannah Menge placed second in both the Pre-Preliminary LTD Compulsory Moves Group D competition and the Pre-Preliminary Ladies LTD Free Skate Group D. Ritchie, Anderson and Menge are all members of the Northern Illinois Skating Club, and are coached by Brigitte Carlson-Roquet.
Seven other members of the Figure Skating Club of Rockford also did very well. Twelve-year-old Bethany Osborne finished fourth in one of her events and fifth in another. Seven-year-old Lauren Bear took home a first-place and third-place medal in two beginner divisions. Nine-year-old Jacob Lock also earned a first- and third-place medal in two mens beginner divisions. Maria Coleman, a 12-year-old, won a second-place medal for spins, and she finished fourth in her other division.
Ten-year-old Hannah Hurny earned a third- and fourth-place finish during the competition. Another 10-year-old, Allison Weiss, finished third in a beginner compulsory division, and 9-year-old Florencia Lowenthal was fifth in the beginner free skate.
Audra Abernathy-Hinds coaches Osborne, Bear, Lock, Coleman, Hurny, Weiss and Lowenthal.
