Local students offered leadership training

Beginning the week of June 18, the City of Rockford Human Services Department will host the nationally-recognized Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute at the Ellis Heights United Neighborhood Center, 1810 W. State St., Rockford.

The Points of Light Leadership Institute provides high school-aged youth leadership skill training usually available only to corporate executives and government leaders. Attendees will gain insight about the need and potential of community service and how young people can make their communities a better place to live.

The Institute features a curriculum developed by the Center for Creative Leadership, one of the world’s foremost authorities on leadership principles. It includes approximately 30 hours of classroom instruction, with segments about community analysis, goal setting, team building, project planning, decision making and other leadership dynamics. This hands-on approach allows students to participate in field exercises and a community service project. Students will also participate in recreational activities sponsored by the Rockford Park District.

The Points of Light Leadership Institute will be Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m., starting the week of June 18, through Aug. 9, and is open to approximately 20 students. For more information about participating in the program, students or parents can call (815) 987-5686 or (815) 987-5685.
