Locals compete in track and field Central District Championship

Amateur track and field athletes will have the opportunity to strut their stuff this weekend at Swanson Stadium at Guilford High School. For the first time ever, the Rockford and Elgin track clubs will host the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Track and Field Central District Championship. The meet will be Saturday and Sunday, June 16-17.

Approximately 1,000 athletes from throughout Illinois are expected to compete. The event is for boys and girls ages 6-18. The divisions for both the boys and the girls will be divided into nine groups according to their year of birth.

Some members of the Rockford All-Star team are: Christian Life attendees Stephanie Garcia and Shanice Smith. Collier will run the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Garcia will run the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Kyle Burks from Guilford High School will run the 200- and 400-meter dashes for the boys. Kristina Shields from Keith School will compete in the long jump. Shields is a national AAU champion in the long jump.

The top eight finishers in each event and each age division will move on to the Regional Championship in Bloomington, Ill., July 14-15. The top four in Bloomington will qualify for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Knoxville, Tenn., during the week of July 25-Aug. 4.

The public is invited to cheer on these athletes as they try to qualify for a position on the AAU Junior Olympic team. Admission is $5 per person for one day or $8 for both days. Action begins at 7 a.m. both days, and is expected to wrap up between 3:30 and 4 p.m.
