Lockwood Park opens May 19 with ‘Animal Mania’

Rockford Park District invites everyone to Lockwood Park for the opening of weekend programs for the season from noon until 5 p.m., Saturday, May 19, (weather permitting) with “Animal Mania,” an afternoon of fun in the country for the whole family. Activities will take place in several areas within the park, including the Trailside Centre, Cookhouse, main and small arenas, and Children’s Farm. Picnic areas and the playground will be available.

Activities will include pony rides, hay rides, an antique tractor show, farm implements display, and tractor rodeos. A re-enactment of former President Grant in full uniform on his palomino will be performed by Scott Whitney.

There will also be demonstrations of horseshoeing from noon to 3 p.m., and sheep shearing at 2 p.m. The Children’s Farm area provides opportunities for children to learn about the park’s animals, and the Cookhouse will host chicken hatching sponsored by the Winnebago County Farm Bureau.

Admission to opening day is free; fees will be charged for some activities, and refreshments will be available for purchase from the Friends of Lockwood Park. Lockwood Park is at 5201 Safford Rd., Rockford. Event fliers with the schedule of activities are available at Park District facilities and Customer Service; activities are subject to change.
