Our resolutions during the holidays may be laudable, but instinctively we know that we just can’t refuse those holiday cookies or a sampling of specially prepared treats. By the close of the holidays, many people will discover that their clothes are snug and their self-esteem diminished.

Just in time to help people confront these post-holiday woes, the OSF Saint Anthony Center for Sports Medicine and Health Fitness is introducing a new program called “Lose 10 Pounds in 10 Weeks.”

Designed to teach participants healthy lifestyle changes and to ultimately lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks, the program begins with a weigh-in Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, and ends March 23, at the OSF Center for Health, 5510 E. State St. in Rockford. Participants may stop by for their weigh-ins and log turn-in Mondays any time between 5:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. when the Fitness Center is open.

Meetings are Wednesdays beginning Jan. 10. Participants may select to attend at 9 a.m. or 6 p.m.

Program members are asked to keep and turn in a weekly food diary and exercise log every Monday. Wednesdays, participants will receive recommendations based on their logs and diaries.

The 10 Wednesday sessions include informative lectures about such topics as resting metabolic rate, exercise at home, fats, proteins and carbohydrates, reading labels, vitamins and supplements, dining out, flexibility and wellness for life.

The program also includes the following:

Assessment with an exercise physiologist, including body fat percentage and measurements at weeks 1 and 10;

Weight assessment every week;

u One-on-one consultation with a registered dietitian;

Food and exercise logs to be turned in each week and analyzed by an exercise physiologist;

“Making better choices” trip to Woodman’s grocery store; and

Healthy recipes and cooking demonstration;

The fee for the 10-week program is $75 for OSF Health Fitness members and $100 for non-members. The fee includes unlimited use of the fitness center.

If two people (“buddies”) register together, they receive a $10 discount on each registration. The buddies do not need to attend the same class time to receive the discount. Class size is limited. Returning participants will also receive a $10 discount if they register for the following session beginning in April 2007.
