The American Lung Associations 15th Annual Critics Choice program and dinner will be Friday, Oct. 24, at Giovannis Restaurant, Rockford. Social hour begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. The theme will be Angels, Miracles, and Hope.
Featured entertainer is Joan Wester Anderson, an Evanston, Ill., native who began her writing career in 1973. Today she is a best-selling author whose books have been on The New York Times best sellers list, and who has had feature articles in several popular magazines. She has published more than 1,000 articles and short stories in a variety of publications, including Womans Day, Modern Bride, Virtue, Readers Digest and the New York Times Syndicate. Her 14 books include Where Angels Walk, True Stories of Heavenly Visitors, which was on The New York Times best seller list for more than a year, has sold almost 2 million copies, and been translated into 14 languages. In 1994, she published the sequel, titled Where Miracles Happen, and for children, An Angel to Watch Over Me. Her 11th book, Where Wonders Prevail, was published in November 1996, and her 12th, Angels We Have Heard on High, in November 1997. The Power of Miracles was released in November 1999. All of the books in the angel/miracle series are published by Ballantine Books, a division of Random House.
Andersons most recent book, Forever Young, the life story of actress Loretta Young, was published by Thomas More Publishers in November 2000. She has appeared on national television programs including Good Morning America, Oprah, 20/20, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and Mother Angelica Live. She has taken part in such documentaries as AngelsBeyond the Light (NBC), Angel Stories and Stories of Miracles (The Learning Channel), and many videos. She has been a story consultant for the TV series Its A Miracle and has lectured in cities across the country. She will tell intriguing anecdotes about things that should not…could not have happened, but did. Her delightful way with words has made her a favorite on radio and TV talk shows.
Also appearing is popular flutist and composer Nicholas Gunn. According to Jazz magazine, Blending world music, folk, and jazz motifs, Nicholas Gunn has created a masterpiece of musical expression. His captivating music will add to the charm of the evening.
Critics Choice also features a delicious meal, silent auction with unique items and trips, and a raffle with exciting prizes including cash, among other surprises.
Dinner and the show and a fun-filled rewarding evening is included in the $60 reservation cost. A full table of 10 is $600, but if remitted in one payment by Sept. 15, you will save $100. Corporate tables will receive special recognition.
The American Lung Association will use the proceeds to promote lung health through research, advocacy, and education right here in northern Illinois.
