Hundreds gathered at Midway Village & Museum Center on Memorial Day, May 30, to witness the culmination of more than 20 years of work with the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans LZ Peace Memorial. Dedication included comments from a Gold Star mother (left photo); Vietnam veterans (center photo); Vietnam Veterans Honor Society member and Memorial organizer Nick “Black Jack Six” Parnello (right photo); and Major General John L. Borling (not pictured). The LZ (Landing Zone) memorial features a Huey, the helicopter used to take soldiers into fighting zones and evacuate wounded during the war. It also includes a black granite wall engraved with 71 names of soldiers—69 Winnebago County men who died in the war, and two declared missing in action.
