Make A Difference Day is Saturday, Oct. 26
Millions of Americans across the country are expected to spend Saturday, October 26–the 11th Make a Difference Daydoing volunteer projects to improve their communities and help neighbors in need. The day is the largest community service effort in the nation, rallying corporations, government leaders, charitable organizations and everyday Americans into action on one day.
USA Weekend magazine sponsors the day, held on the fourth Saturday in October. Paul Newman and his food company, Newmans Own, Inc. and the Points of Light Foundation are also major co-sponsors of this event. They make 10 monetary awards to activities chosen by a panel of judges who best exemplify the true spirit of making a difference, and the awards will be presented in April of 2003.
Rockford-area ice skaters will come together on Saturday, October 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Carlson Ice Arena in Loves Park for a Skate-a-thon. All pledges raised through this event will help the Rockford Park District Ice Facilities purchase new sleds and walkers. This equipment assists the special needs youth and adults with their ice skating.
Anyone wishing to participate in this activity can pick up a pledge sheet from the office at Carlson Ice Arena. Pledge monies are to be turned in by November 9.
Anyone wishing to make a donation to help with this fund-raising activity should contact Martha Berg, the skating coordinator for the Rockford Park District Ice Facilities, at 969-4069.
