The Rockford Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers is planning the 22nd Annual Regional MATHCOUNTS Program.

MATHCOUNTS involves 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and was developed as a positive and rewarding enhancement to local math programs.

The local MATHCOUNTS Program involves students from schools within the Rockford Chapter boundaries—Boone, Winnebago, Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties.

This year’s Regional Competition will be Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Rock Valley College Woodward Technology Center in Rockford. The top two teams, along with the top two individuals, will advance to the State Competition March 4 at the Holiday Inn in Matteson.

The four top finishers at the State Competition advance to the National Competition in Washington, D.C. Four Mathletes will represent Illinois in the National Competition.

In 2004, Team Illinois was crowned National Champions.

Ten local area schools will compete this year.

Schedule for the competition will be as follows: noon-12:30 p.m., registration; 12:30-12:45 p.m., general instructions; 12:45-1:30 p.m., sprint round; 1:30-2 p.m., target round; 2-2:30 p.m., team round; 2:30-3 p.m., break; 3-3:45 p.m., countdown round; and 3:45-4 p.m., awards.

Parents are welcome to enjoy refreshments at 2:30 p.m. The Countdown Round and awards presentation begins at 3 p.m.
