Mayor's Arts Awards to be held June 9

On Thursday, June 9 at 5 p.m., Mayor Lawrence J. Morrissey and the Rockford Area Arts Council will co-host a celebration of the arts: the 2005 Mayor’s Arts Awards at the Coronado Theatre.

This event has many facets: an elegant red-carpet reception at 5 p.m. includes hors d’oeuvres and cash bar in front of the Coronado; the awards announcements and performance vignettes in the theater, hosted by the Mayor and the Arts Council, followed by a buffet on the stage.

The 6 p.m. awards ceremony will begin with performance vignettes by Without Shoes Dance Company and Nelson, the Sock Monkey; Sara Lemen, mezzo-soprano, piano by Dr. Fred Conrad; Bach Chamber Choir, Director Dr. Eric A. Johnson; Bob Bates on the Grand Barton Organ and the Steinway.

Twenty-eight nominations were received this year in the categories of Individual Artist, Individual Arts Advocate, Star Teacher, Exceptional Student, Business or Corporation, and Creative Cultural Event.

The recipients of this year’s awards will each receive original works of art. The Individual Artist and Individual Arts Advocate Awards will be created by Rockford artist Joseph Church. Awards for the remaining categories will be created by H. Edward Riddle.

Nominees in each category are as follows:

Community Impact by a Corporation or Business: Bennie’s Cleaners, Main Street Financial. Sponsored by Manpower.

Exceptional Arts Student: Leah Asher, Hannah Gough, Madeline Herdeman, Glennis Stratemeyer. Sponsored by Viking Chemical.

Star Teacher: Dorothy Bock & Elaine Hirschenberger, Robb Edwards. Sponsored by Northern Public Radio.

Individual Arts Advocate: Karen Howard, joan e. kole, Barbara Pittman, Paul Saltzgiver, Arlene Wagner. Sponsored by Main Street Financial.

Individual Artist: Curtis Johnsen, Rod MacDonald, Christine Swanberg, Arlene Wagner, Mike Webb. Sponsored by Associated Bank.

Special Achievement Award: Winner will be announced at the event. Sponsored by Fred C. Olson Funeral Chapels.

Creative Cultural Event Award: “Chandler Starr Miller Scholarship Competition” presented by Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center; “City of Rockford Pipe Band”; “Cultural Ethnic Festival” presented by Camaraderie Arts Inc.; “Festival of Words” presented by Rockford Public Library; “La Posada” presented by the Hispanic Gallery of the Ethnic Heritage Museum; Quilters presented by Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center; “The Launch of Artists’ Ensemble Theater” presented by Artists’ Ensemble Theater; “The Rockford Community Exhibition Series: Screw City & 2020 Visions” presented by the Rockford Art Museum; “Third Annual Youth Honors Band” presented by Rockford Wind Ensemble; “Pages and Stages Concert” presented by Rockford Wind Ensemble.

A Celebratory Buffet will take place at 7:30 p.m., featuring gourmet cuisine, sweets and cash bar on stage. An oil painting by Ingrid Neuhofer Dohm will be put up for auction. A 9 p.m. post-party will be held at Kortman Gallery above the Kortman Center for Design, 107 N. Main St.
