Med students plan Hispanic health fair

“Unidos Por Tu Salud,” a Hispanic health fair, planned in collaboration with La Voz Latina, has been scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11 at La Voz Latina, 412 Market St., Rockford. Second-year medical students at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford are encouraged through a pathophysiology in clinical medicine class to work in small groups addressing medical and community issues. One group is investigating Hispanic issues and is attempting to bridge the apparent disparity of health standards between Hispanic and non-Hispanic residents. In conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month, the students are working to expose the Hispanic community to the health resources available in the Rockford area. Preventive care measures will be stressed, and Hispanics will be encouraged to take a more proactive role in their own health care. Approximately 15 local health organizations are expected to host booths at the fair, offering information regarding their unique services.
