Memorial fund set up for slain officer

A memorial fund has been set for Officer Edward Ritter, a patrolman with the Rockford Police Department who was wounded in the line of duty and later died at St. Anthony Medical Center on Monday, Dec. 5. The injury occurred in Roscoe, and donations may be sent to any Associated Bank & Trust in Rockford or Roscoe.

Ritter is survived by his wife, Sue, and the couple’s two children. He served for 13 years on the force.

“The money we gain will be set up in a trust fund,” said Patrol Officer Bruce Brannum. “We are talking to a financial planner how to get the most out of it so the kids will get the best benefit.”

Brannum noted that Ritter also worked part time for Rockford School District 205. “Some of the teachers are also setting up a fund to try to plant a tree or set up a park bench in his honor,” said his fellow officer. How long will the memorial fund be in existence? “We will probably run it for six months so there will be time to donate,” said Brannum.
