memorial service to be held for homeless

A memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, in memory of the homeless people who died in Rockford during the year 2000. The service will be in the main floor browsing room of the Rockford Public Library, Wyman Street, downtown Rockford, and is sponsored by Rockford Urban Ministries and the Healthcare for the Homeless Program at Crusader Clinic.

Dec. 21 is the national day of remembrance, both because it is the longest night of the year, and the first day of winter.

At least 16 homeless people died in Rockford in the past year. “We will take time to remember their gifts to us,” said Cindy Leib, manager of Crusader Clinic’s Healthcare for the Homeless Program, “as we read each person’s name. We will also encourage one another as workers for the homeless, nurture our hope that the community will open their heart, and prepare ourselves for the coming winter.” The public is welcome.

For more information, please call Stanley Campbell, Rockford Urban Ministries, at (815) 964-7111, or Cindy Leib, Crusader Clinic, at 490-1688.
