Another favorite performer takes the stage this weekend as Charlottes Web presents Kraig Kenning at 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, at Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 415 N. Church St.
His music spans contemporary folk, blues, roots rock, American fingerstyle and Americana. Few artists can connect so directly with such diverse listeners while playing more than 200 dates a year, receiving airplay on 40 stations nationwide, and selling 60,000-plus recordings of six CDs.
A National Slide Guitar champion, Kennings fingerstyle has been compared with Leo Kottke and Willy Porter, his vocals reminiscent of Bruce Cockburn, and his overall performance and presentation stand equal with any of todays top singer/songwriters, according to Dave Glynn of the Fox Valley Blues Society. Kennings electrifying stage presence has been honed over 20 years as a live performer throughout the U.S. At National Guitars First Slide Competition, he took first-place honors as Best Unsigned Artist. He has opened for Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones, and slide guitar master Sonny Landreth; and he has shared lineups with club and folk series favorites such as John Gorka and Patti Larkin.
Kennings deft fingerpicking and slide work on acoustic and resonator guitar is truly impressive, but so is his flair for crafting intelligent, heartfelt lyrics and memorable melodies.Chicago Tribune.
