The Mental Health Association of Rock River Valley (MHARRV) will hold the first Kennedy 5K Run/Walk for Mind, Body & Soul, at 8 a.m., Saturday, July 21, on the Northern Illinois University, Rockford campus.
The race is sponsored by a variety of community health care organizations, businesses and individual donors. The event is named in memory of Margaret Kennedy, a lifelong advocate and leader of mental health programming locally and statewide.
Funds raised by this competitive run and non-competitive fitness walk will allow MHARRV to:
1) help NAMI Northwest to continue its family education program;
2) allow Group Hope to maintain mutual help activities for people with bi-polar disorders;
3) provide direct assistance funds for people in need; and
4) assist with community education projects coordinated by MHARRV.
The event is open to the community at large for a registration fee of $20. Pre-registration will take place in the NIU campus lobby from 4-7 p.m., Friday, July 20, and the day of the race from 6:30-7 a.m. Special awards will be given to the first-place male and female finishers. There will be additional awards given to those winning or placing in 14 age divisions and for the individual or team (up to five) bringing in the most pledge money.
Registration forms, pledge envelopes and any further information may be obtained by contacting Dick Kunnert (815) 226-4770, Dr. Charles Smith (815) 398-9628, or Gail Tennant (815) 654-2745. MHARRV is a nonprofit organization, and any additional tax-deductible donations are welcome.
