Michael Bilderback, a local young gun in the world of auto racing, is tuning up for the upcoming 2007 season. He recently set a new track record at the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky.

Saturday, March 17, Bilderback was behind the wheel of his No. 2 Legends car when he turned the record lap of 15.45 during qualifying for the Legends division. After qualifying first, he finished the race in third place in the Masters/Pro Division. More than 40 other drivers from across the country competed in the race.

Bilderback is the 2005 and 2006 Legends Illinois State Champion, and the 2005 Legends National Champion. He will race the Legends car again this season, as well as moving up to compete in the Late Model division at Rockford Speedway. His competition in that division will include his uncle and seven-time track champion Ricky Bilderback.

Last December, the younger Bilderback traveled to Orlando, Fla., to compete in the 2006 MOPAR Annual Sprint and Midget Classic Race at the Orlando Speed World. There, he had a chance to meet with officials from NASCAR. Provided he has a good rookie season this year in the Late Model division, you can be assured he will be on their radar screen.

He is currently finishing the academic year at South Beloit High School. Starting in April, you can catch him on Saturday nights at Rockford Speedway. Could he be the next driver from our area to move up to the big leagues? I’d say he stands a pretty good chance.
