Singer/songwriter/guitarist Michael Johnson, who cant be confined to a single genre, who loves what hes been doing all his life, will perform at 8 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 415 N. Church St. Charlottes Web is pleased to welcome him back.
He started out under a country label, but had to branch out from there. His voice immediately identifies him as the man who sings Bluer Than Blue, Give Me Wings, Thats That, This Night Wont Last Forever and other landmark songs. His music shows a diversity, depth and heart that come from years of dedication.
Johnson grew up in Denver, Colo., started playing at age 13 and never quit. Singing, playing, writing and recording are the only things hes ever done, and he loves it. He studied guitar in Barcelona, and he plays on all his records with a distinctive style. His expertise on Flamenco to fingerstyle guitar is second to none. In 1968, he joined the Chad Mitchell Trio with John Denver and toured for a year. The following year, he acted in New York off Broadway and toured with the company of Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living in Paris. In subsequent years, he signed with various record companies and kept perfecting his style. In 1997, he signed with Intersound Records and released his 14th album.
Johnson likes performing as a soloist. He prefers the intimacy and spontaneity of a show that can change with the moment. The rich texture of his voice, the lyrical content and his quirky sense of humor elicit the feeling of being at home with a friend.
Billboard magazine called him A dazzling guitarist and wonderfully expressive singer. No two shows are alike. Bruce Viland of the Chicago Daily Tribune described him as … a masterful guitarist who can pull off some amazing stunts with such incredible nonchalance that he doesnt seem quite human.
