Middle school basketball

A plan to bring back Rockford middle school basketball was to be outlined Tuesday at a news conference at the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, Rockford.

The effort is being organized by a group of community volunteers and is being called “10 for 10.” It is asking citizens to give at least $1 to each of District 205’s 10 middle schools: Eisenhower, Flinn, Kennedy, Lincoln, RESA, West, Barbour, Ellis, RSTA and Washington.

The goal is to raise $35,000 to provide $3,500 per middle school next year to bring interscholastic basketball to sixth, seventh and eighth graders in Rockford’s public schools.

All sports activities were eliminated in the “no sports” school year of 1976-77. While they returned to high schools in 1977, middle school sports never have returned, said Genelle Samuelson, organizer of the “10 for 10” program.

The Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is located at 946 N. 2nd St., Rockford, 61107. Donations can be sent there.
