Minnesota church works at Hunger Connection

Seventeen high school youth with six adult volunteer supervisors have arrived in Rockford on July 12 for one week, through the Rockford Urban Ministries work camp program. They are working at the Hunger Connection on South Avon Street.

The group is from Presbyterian Church of the Way in Shoreview, Minn. While in Rockford, the work crew is staying at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Rockford. At the Hunger Connection, 320 S. Avon St., they will help sort large quantities of food into packages for the area food pantries and soup kitchens. They will also work on improving the appearance and security of Hunger Connection’s building.

Rockford Urban Ministries has hosted work crews since 1997. This summer, it will host six crews besides the group from Minnesota. “We are seeking more work from the area’s nonprofits,” said Stanley Campbell, director of RUM. “We want to make sure we keep our work crews busy. Anyone with ideas for work can call Rockford Urban Ministries at 964-7111. There still are time slots available throughout the summer, so if work crews would like to volunteer, they are more than welcome.”

Work crews will be coming this summer from Shoreview, Minn.; Tekamah, Neb.; Defiance, Ohio; and Newberry, Mich., as well as from northern Illinois congregations.
