n To raise money for the Angela Rushford Childrens Organ Donation Fund of Illinois
Miss Freeport, Michelle Maves, will present a benefit concert Saturday, June 21 at 8 p.m. at the New American Theater, 118 N. Main St., Rockford. Maves, who will leave to compete for Miss Illinois next week, will be a junior at North Central College in Naperville this fall. At the Rockford City Council meeting on Monday, June 16, Mayor Doug Scott, proclaimed the week Michelle Maves week in Rockford.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Angela Rushford Childrens Organ Donation Fund, administered by the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. Maves has chosen donation and this fund as recipient for many reasons.
I have a strong desire to help those in needI hope to use my talents to help others, she said. Today, there are over 80,000 men, women and children waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. If I can make a difference in even one persons life, then it has been worth it.
Maves learned of Angela while working with the Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network. Five-year-old Angela received a life-saving kidney transplant from a Mt. Morris man, David Harper, after he answered a plea from Angelas family in The Rock River Times earlier this year. Angela, her parents and David Harper, along with members from the donation community, will be present to share their stories.
The concert, Let Me Entertain You, will feature Michelle performing a variety of music styles and songs. Michelle has been performing since the age of 3. At age 9, she performed in Branson, Mo. Since age 10, Maves has performed the National Anthem at Chicago Cubs and White Sox games. Another highlight came when Michelle performed live with Shania Twain at the MetroCentre in Rockford.
