‘Mr. C’ produces album with Freedom Singers

The Patriots’ Gateway Community Center recently announced that the “Freedom Singers” Choir is producing its first album, due out in early June. Under the direction of Rockford-area musical Renaissance man, Carl A. Cole (“Mr. C”), the recording sessions took place in mid-April, and the title is to be From Every Mountainside.

The Freedom Singers Choir is a multi-cultural, inspirational group of boys and girls grades 5-12. These kids have performed on multiple occasions in Rockford under Mr. C’s direction, including the Gateway’s Annual Recognition Dinner, the National Anthem opener at the MetroCentre for the Rockford Lightning, and the Mayor’s Hunger Luncheon.

Daniel Jones II, Israel Martinez and Desiree Mannery, the choir’s teen leaders, applied for the “In Youth We Trust” grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois recently to help in the various costs of the recording sessions and further promotion. They were awarded $750, which will go toward the benefit of the choir’s goal to provide a safe alternative for creative expression of Rockford-area youth.

From Every Mountainside will be available at The Burpee Art Museum June 14 at noon. Information: 967-0413.
