Music Gear Central: The Bach TR300H student trumpet from Guzzardo

Are you thinking about buying your child a trumpet? Local dealer Guzzardo Performance Music is the area’s leading dealer in band instruments, and can affordably outfit any aspiring horn player.

I’ve been a customer of Guzzardo Music since moving to Rockford, and its staff has always taken care of me. It’s also nice to see so many young band students coming and going from the building. Aside from being a top-notch retail store, Guzzardo is of one of northern Illinois’ premier schools of musical instruction.

To complement the expertise of its instructors, Guzzardo carries a strong line of trumpets, mainly the Bach TR300H, a leading student horn.

A standard trumpet in the key of Bb, the brass TR300H is a finely-constructed instrument. The 4 3/4-inch bell and the .459-inch bore allows this horn to project like a pro model. The pistons are made of Monel metal, an alloy made of aluminum, iron, copper, nickel and others. Together with the nylon valve guides, the action is succinct and quiet. The first valve thumb hook and the third finger slide allow for quick and easy adjustment.

As with all lines bearing the Bach name, the TR300H includes a signature Bach mouthpiece. The company, started in 1918 by trumpeter Vincent Bach, manufactured trumpet mouthpieces before breaking into the brass instrument market in 1924. The Bach mouthpiece remains one of the most popular mouthpieces on the market.

This Bach model is a sturdy first horn that, with proper care, should get a student through many years of playing. Many students often hold on to them even after upgrading to professional horns. The TR300H also holds its value quite well, making it a solid trade-in item and a quick-selling secondhand trumpet.

The Bach TR300H comes with a sturdy double-wall case with a separate compartment for mouthpieces, valve oil and other accessories and a strong shoulder strap. The horn lists for $990. Guzzardo Performance Music is letting them go for $645 to buy them outright. To work with budget constraints and questionable levels of commitment, Guzzardo offers a rent-to-own program that may include additional discounts. According to the staff, the Bach TR300H can be purchased by making monthly installments of $35.39 for a new horn. The store also has a selection of used and refurbished trumpets.

More information about the Bach TR300H can be found on the manufacturer’s Web site, Guzzardo Performance Music is at 3010 Charles St., in Rockford, across from Rockford East High School. Information about lessons, store hours and products is also online at or by calling the store at 229-5020.
