National Night Out plans announced

The City of Rockford will celebrate the 22nd Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Ken-Rock Park, at the corner of Reed and Bildahl Road.

There will be police, fire and emergency vehicles on display along with games, entertainment and food from 6 to 9 p.m.

The event is being sponsored by the City of Rockford, the Rockford Police Department and the Helping Hands Neighborhood Association.

Neighborhood groups and community organizations from across the city are being invited to take part in the annual event.

Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 34 million people participated.

National Night Out is sponsored nationally by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and is designed to accomplish the following:

Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;

Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;

Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and

Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
