Does this sound like you? How I wish I could just fall asleep. How I wish I could just stay asleep. I would say that 80 percent of the people who call and make an appointment to visit me, the reason is to be able to help them go to sleep or stay asleep. This is a huge problem. Medication such as Ambien and Ambien CR is not doing it with all of the side effects. When a medication states you should not be taking it if you are pregnant or thinking of getting pregnant, that personally scares me, and it should.

Do you know that a 16-year-old needs the same amount of sleep at night as a 60-year-old? It is a misconception that as we age, we need less sleep. The truth is, once we hit adolescence, our own special body sets a sleep requirement that will stay with us for life. For most of us, it is seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Getting a good night’s sleep is something we all take for granted, until we do not get one. Nothing can cause your mood and well-being to unravel faster than trouble falling asleep or getting back to sleep. For women with insomnia, this frustration can last for many weeks to months. Sleeplessness is one of the most common complaints I hear from my patients. It affects our well-being in the form of low immunity, weight gain, adrenal fatigue, neurotransmitter disruption and much more. Without sleep, your body pays a huge price. When you sleep, your brain does the best work when you are in the delta sleep. Delta sleep is the hardest stage to wake up from. When we are light sleepers, we do not get into the delta sleep, and this is where we need to be for our bodies to heal and rebuild. This is the time when you sleep that your immune system can deal with healing issues and unresolved issues. Sleep is a time of biological processing. Without it, we simply cannot meet the demands of our waking lives, let alone keep everything in balance.

Lack of sleep will cause weight gain. This is because it affects your metabolism. Studies suggest a link between lack of sleep, obesity and type 2 diabetes. Anyone can have a sleepless night or two every now and then, but when it happens night after night after night, this, then, is a characteristic of insomnia. The use of sleeping pills in America has more than doubled since 2000. People using the popular pill Ambien have been reported sleepwalking and binge eating during the night with no recollection. I had a gentleman who was on Ambien, and he gained more than 30 pounds within a three-month period and could not understand why. Read the handout before you take a new medication. Most pharmacologic sleep aids are habit forming and actually lead to chronic insomnia.

If you cannot sleep, you have to take the time to learn why. Just by popping a pill is not going to get to the root of the problem. That is what I, as a naturopathic doctor, try to help people with. Many things will cause sleepless nights. Hormones, stress, diet, drugs, emotions, allergies, medications, just to name a few. Naturopathic testing can help uncover many issues. I have been blessed to be able to help people naturally to uncover what is the underlying problem.

“Don’t just think that adults have a hard time sleeping. I recently got divorced, and my 8-year-old daughter was affected terribly by this. She took in so much of the abuse that she suffered physically and emotionally. I took her to Dr. Julia, and after doing some testing, Dr. Julia made her a tincture, and it worked the very first night. What was wonderful was that Dr. Julia educated my daughter about her emotions and did not treat her like an 8-year-old. Thank you for helping my daughter and myself. We are both getting a good night’s sleep.”—May W.

“My husband was getting so much chemo and radiation during his lung cancer that it was not only affecting his breathing, it was affecting his sleep. The radiation was actually burning his lungs more than helping [so] that he chose to quit the medical treatment, and when we tried to work with his medical doctor for sleeping, it was to no avail since we quit the medical treatments. Dr. Julia gladly saw Les, and after our first visit, he was finally able to sleep over four hours. We continue to work with Dr. Julia now to help with Les’s other medical problems.”—Donna M.

“I was having an awful time sleeping when I started going through my change. I could not believe my medical doctor was going to put me on the HRT patch after everything that has come out about it. I saw Dr. Julia’s ad in The Rock River Times and decided to go the natural route. It has been a godsend. I have sent all my ‘hot flash’ girlfriends and relatives to see her.”—Mary T.
