Neil Simon’s Rumors at Freeport High School May 17-19

FREEPORT—Freeport High School’s Theatre Department will present its final performance of the 2006-2007 school year, Neil Simon’s hysterical comedy Rumors, at 7:30 p.m., May 17-19.

Rumors opened on Broadway in 1988, and audiences have enjoyed this farce ever since. Four rich couples arrive in formal wear for a 10th anniversary party in Sneden’s Landing, only to discover their hosts have been incapacitated by mysterious events involving gunshots.

Since their host is the town’s deputy mayor, his friends desperately try to cover up the scandal—only they don’t know what the scandal is!

These hoity-toity guests argue with each other, throw out ridiculous guesses as to what has happened to their hosts (who are nowhere to be seen), and suffer from humorous physical calamities, such as temporary deafness, chronic back spasms, and stress caused by trying to quit smoking.

Tim Connors, director of theater at Freeport High School, directs this zany farce, complete with slamming doors and gags.

“Neil Simon is such a great choice for high school students,” Connors said. “These talented students are having a great time with all the silliness and sarcasm. Audience members who have enjoyed Simon’s earlier shows like The Odd Couple and Barefoot in the Park are going to laugh themselves silly during this show.”

Elwyn Webb is the set designer, and Kathleen Williams is the costumer.

Tickets, $5, are on sale in the Jeannette Lloyd Theatre box office. Make reservations by calling (815) 232-0428 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information about the production, contact Connors at
