New Afghan leader ex-oil consultant
Footnote to the war on terror: The following paragraph appeared in the Paris newspaper Le Monde, in a story about the new head of the Afghan provisional government.
Hamid Karzai, who is as comfortable discussing sitting on a carpet as in a Washington or London salon, has a profound knowledge of the Western world. After Kabul and India, where he has studied law, he completed his learning in the USA, where he acted for a while as a consultant for the American oil company Unocal, at the time it was considering building a pipeline in Afghanistan.
Unocal, a California company, still is considering building a pipeline to bring oil from the Caspian basin to the Orient. As reported in these pages previously, the Taliban and Osama bin Laden did not accept the deal offered by U.S. authorities in this regard. Critics of the Bush administration purport that triggered the war in Afghanistan, which was planned well before the events of 9/11.
Critics also purport that today, Russia and other countries in that region may be posing as friends and allies of the United States in hopes of getting a piece of the oil action.
