New American Theater celebrates 30th with renovations

New American Theater, the only professional theater company in Illinois outside of Chicago, is celebrating its 30th anniversary season not only with a series of six plays on the Main Stage but with a series of renovation projects. A newly redecorated lobby sports chic colors of apple green with shades of purple. A beautiful, custom-made oak bar is set along the lobby wall, and a matching oak cart highlights items for sale by the theater’s auxiliary, the NAT Wing. Renovation also expanded the box office area, allowing ticket sales from two windows and creating a support office on the mezzanine level. The lobby and box office renovations, as well as a planned new marquee, are being funded by local contributions.

There is also a great deal more renovation happening behind the scenes. NAT received a $100,000 tourism grant from the State of Illinois to enable NAT to install a new box office system, implement a new phone system, upgrade the theater’s heating and cooling systems, replace the stage floor, and hang new stage curtains.

“We’re excited by the energy and updated appeal of our new lobby,” says NAT Administrative Director Mary Beaver. “Downtown is where things are happening, from great restaurants to interesting work and lobby spaces.

“If people haven’t been to NAT in a while—or maybe ever—we encourage them to come check us out for a whole season or even just an evening out on the town,” she says. “They’ll discover what our subscribers already know, how much fun and entertaining an evening of live, professional theater can be in a setting like ours where every seat is the best seat in the house.”
