Even though we are still a couple weeks from spring, its not too early to start thinking about golf. While we are getting the clubs out of the basement or garage, we can learn about the upcoming season via a new radio show that hit the airwaves this past weekend.
Rockford Golfs! made its debut Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6:30 a.m. on local radio station WROK 1440. Rockford Park District employee Paul Arco hosts the one-hour weekly show. He will be joined on a rotating basis by several co-hosts throughout the season. Some scheduled guests are five-time city champion and member of the Rockford Golf Hall of Fame Lloyd McWilliams, fellow Park District employees Dave Claeyssens and Nancy Kauzlarich, and head professional of Aldeen Golf Club Duncan Geddes.
Listeners will be able to get the latest information about a variety of Park District programs, including lessons, tournament dates, instructional tips and other news about the sport of golf. According to Arco, the show is about local golf, but will also feature reports from the professional tournaments. Everyone is invited to call in with their questions, and well be giving away rounds of golf at the Park District courses as well as other golf-related prizes, he said.
Saturday, March 11, Arco will be joined by Geddes and a local health care professional discussing the proper ways to get the body in condition for golfing. Focus will be placed on stretching and warming up the muscles to avoid injury.
After listening to the show, golfers may want to try their newly learned skills and tips at one of the many local courses that are already open. Most are open on a day-by-day basis, based on weather conditions. Elliot is the only Park District course currently open. The rest of the Park District and forest preserve courses are scheduled to open later this month, if Mother Nature continues to cooperate. Make sure you phone ahead this time of year before heading out to play. FORE!
