Nominate artists by April 16

Individual artist, advocate, student, teacher, event or business—certainly you can think back over the past year and someone or something comes to mind as an outstanding arts experience or person. If you’re reading this paper, you are connected to the arts in Rockford, no doubt.

New this year, we’re thrilled to announce that our favorite guys, Doug and Kevin at Engine Studios, are involved. They will be producing a phenomenal montage that will highlight each nominee, including pictures, words from the nominator and other cool stuff. When you nominate, we ask you to submit photos to use for this presentation. The Rockford Area Arts Council’s (RAAC) Mayor’s Arts Awards are about celebrating the people who bring us a vibrant community.

I would like to remind you that an individual artist is not limited to visual artists. Our last two recipients were none other than those talented actors Rod MacDonald and Stephen Vrtol III.

It is always amazing to see how many incredible arts people and events we have in Rockford. The selection committee consists of past recipients and arts enthusiasts, and the decisions are never easy.

Dennis Horton, RAAC’s Mayor’s Arts Awards chairman, is working with his committee to make this year’s event the best ever. We are shooting for record attendance, so we encourage you to bring a friend. The event is June 7, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are just $25 for Rockford Area Arts Council members and $30 at the door.

So nominate today! Consider it your privilege, your right, your duty to arts and country. Anyone from the community can nominate. Call Ann-Margret with questions; she’s always willing to help. Forms are available online at It’s easy, but time is running out. Forget your taxes—that can wait. Operators will be standing by until 5 p.m., Monday, April 16.
