Nominations for Mayor’s Arts Awards deadline April 30

To give artists and arts advocates the recognition they deserve, the City of Rockford and the Rockford Area Arts Council in 1989 created the Mayor’s Arts Awards. Excellence in the arts in six categories will be recognized at the 2004 Mayor’s Arts Awards at the Coronado Theatre on June 8. Nominations are now being solicited by Mayor Doug Scott and the Arts Council.

The categories for which anyone may submit a nomination are Individual Artist, Individual Arts Advocate, Business, Exceptional Student of the Arts, Star Teacher, and Creative Cultural Event. Last year, the Mayor’s Arts Awards attractedmore than 50 nominations! The cultural community considers these prestigious awards to be the Rockford region’s “Academy Awards” for the arts.

The awards honor individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts and whose contributions have resulted in a major and positive impact on the community. The recipients will receive original works of art created by local artists.

At the Mayor’s Arts Awards, Scott will announce this year’s nominees and recipients of the 16th Annual Mayor’s Arts Awards 2004. More than 500 people are expected to attend.

Nominations must be delivered to the Arts Council no later than April 30 or show an April 30 postmark. For more information and/or to receive a nomination form for an artist, advocate, corporation, event, teacher or student, call the Rockford Area Arts Council at 963-6765.
