NRA dinner fund-raiser Oct. 5

The proliferation of guns in our society has caused a ton of controversy. There have been pro and con articles and columns concerning guns and the right to bear arms in this very paper. It is one issue that most people feel strongly about, one way or the other.

If you happen to be pro guns, you’ll want to be at the Clock Tower Resort & Convention Center, 7801 E. State St., Rockford this Friday night, Oct. 5. The Winnebago-Boone County Friends of the National Rifle Association is holding a dinner, silent auction and raffle fund-raiser beginning at 5:30 p.m. The dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The cost to attend is $35 per person.

Raffle winners will take home an Armalite AR-24 Compact 9mm caliber pistol and an Armalite AR-180B Semi-Auto .223 rifle.

According to the Friends of the NRA Web site ( attendees can expect “simple food, family and fund-raising. Whether you are a hunter, competitive shooter or just a proud gun owner, Friends of the NRA events have something of interest for the entire family.” The Web site even has a picture of one of their former events. Almost smack dab in the middle of that photo is a couple with a bottle of wine or champagne on their table.

I’m not exactly a huge anti-gun person; in fact, I even own a hunting shotgun. I’m definitely not an anti-alcohol crusader: in fact, there is alcohol in my refrigerator, and I had some wine as recently as yesterday. I just can’t imagine taking either of my daughters to one of these events. I’m going to go out on a limb and say mixing cocktails and guns is not the place I want my “family” to be around.

For those of you who might enjoy such an evening, show up early! I’m sure it’ll be packed. For more information or to order your tickets by phone, call (815) 635-3155.
