Nwe ornament designs added to Rockford Landmark Collection

By

Three new ornament designs have been added this year to the Rockford Landmark Collection of hand-painted holiday ornaments from J.R. Kortman Center for Design: Tinker Cottage, the Midway Theater and the Sesquicentennial Bur Oak tree in Sinnissippi Rose Garden.

Each landmark image is individually hand-painted on the inside of a glass ornament to create a one-of-a-kind work of art. The ancient technique was perfected in China centuries ago as a way of decorating snuff bottles. The paint was applied to the inside of a glass ornamental object to protect the image from rubbing off or scratching away from the surface of the object.

Doc Slafkosky, co-owner of J.R. Kortman, brought photographs of Rockford landmarks on several trips to China and worked with artisans there who created the collectible ornaments.

“Every year we have added new designs to the collection,” Slafkosky said. “There are now over a dozen Rockford images available.”

Landmarks included in the collection are “Symbol” sculpture, “The Rockmen” sculptures, the News Tower, Faust Hotel, the Gazebo in Beattie Park, Davis Park building in addition to Tinker Cottage, the Midway Theater and the Sinnissippi Oak Tree.

Also available are three designs representing Klehm Arboretum which can be purchased at the Klehm Gift Shop, the Coronado Theatre, available at the theater, and Second Congregational Church, which can be purchased at the church.

All other landmark designs are available at J.R. Kortman Center for Design, 107 N. Main St., Rockford. For more information, call 968-0123.
