Amy Mary-Rebecca (Cal) Halberstadt, 34, of Rockford, will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Born Oct. 26, 1971, to Patrick Cal and Donna Cal Million, she was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away Aug. 30, 2006. She married Doug Halberstadt on Sept. 27, 1997; their daughter, Meredith Camille Halberstadt, was born Oct. 3, 2000. Amy was a 1990 Guilford High School graduate and earned her bachelor of arts degree from Illinois State University in 1994. She worked in the health insurance industry for several years, then switched to teaching. She earned her masters degree in education at Rockford College and graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. Amy was a member of the honorary teaching society Phi Delta Kappa.
Amy began her teaching career at West Middle School in August 2005, teaching seventh grade. She was an excellent teacher who had high expectations and cared about her students deeply. She was a wonderful, dedicated wife, mother, stepmother, daughter, sister, godmother, aunt and friend. Everyone who knew her admired her courage and persistence in her 22-month battle with cancer.
Survivors are her husband, Doug; daughter, Meredith; step-daughter, Abigail; mother, Donna (Ron) Million; father, Patrick Cal; brothers, Mark and Michael (Charon) Cal; nephew and godson, Adrian Cal; niece, Amanda Cal; best friend and caregiver, Tricia Kitelinger; special friends, Jenny, Sara, Carol, Barb, Sue, Alex, Mary; godfather, David Keltner and many other friends and relatives.
The family expresses special thanks to Pam Graney and to Hospice Care of America and the nursing staff. Amys wish was to help those pursuing a career in education at Rockford College.
