OTW Green Committee seeks volunteers for 2003 festival

Last years three-day On the Waterfront (OTW) festival in downtown Rockford generated 52 tons of garbage. This year, the OTW Green Committee hopes to trim that total by 10 tons.
OTW has purchased 400 recycling receptacles for paper, plastic, aluminum and glass to be placed throughout the 30-block OTW event. The receptacles will also be used for summer events in Davis Park, the Fourth of July program and Park District-supported events throughout the city.
Also to reduce the amount of waste being dumped at local landfills, and to help educate people about the importance of recycling, the OTW Green Committee will be implementing a number of programs leading up to and during this years festival. Programs include the following: a news conference May 29 to announce the recycling program and unveil recycling mascot Rocco; public service announcements with Rockford Mayor Doug Scott; an appearance at the Fourth of July parade with Rocco; visits to local schools; and a six-story (fee-free for those with Waterfront passes) Kids Castle at OTW offering a rainforest full of educational activities for children.
To help make the OTW recycling program a success, the OTW Green Committee is seeking volunteers in the following areas: Green Committee Assistant Manager, signage, vendor education, volunteer education, training, educational booth coordinator, educational booth committee, Kids Castle Environmental Coordinator, Kids Castle activity staff, Green Committee general support, event support, recycling container strike crew, and recycling container cleaning crew.

OTW Green Committee meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at the OTW corporate office.
