The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is a national patient advocacy organization that seeks to focus national attention on the need to find the cure for pancreatic cancer. PanCAN provides public and professional education that embraces the urgent need for more research, effective treatments, prevention programs, and early detection methods for pancreatic cancer, and it is the first national patient-based advocacy organization specifically focused on this disease.
I became involved with PanCAN after my father (David Ebrecht) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2001. My efforts to increase public awareness about pancreatic cancer surged after my step-father-in-law (Russell Pico Cavedo) lost his 3-1/2-year battle with pancreatic cancer in July 2002.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States for men and women. The 99 percent mortality rate is the highest of any cancer, and the average life expectancy after diagnosis with metastatic disease is just three to six months. There is no known cure or easy way to detect this deadlly disease. Despite these statistics, there has been very little attention given to the disease, and the research spending is the lowest of any leading cancer.
Therefore, to raise visibility, for the last five years PanCAN volunteers have obtained state proclamations from their governors to declare November National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. PanCAN now seeks your support to obtain a congressional proclamation declaring November as National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month on a national level.
On June 10, Rep. Todd Platts, R-Pa., introduced House Resolution 262 (H. Res. 262) to recognize November as National Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month. A congressional proclamation only will enhance PanCANs efforts to increase awareness about this dreadful disease.
I urge you to contact Rep. Donald Manzullo and encourage him to co-sponsor this House resolution. Visit www.pancan.org for more information regarding this extremely deadly cancer and ways you can donate to the fight against pancreatic cancer. I would be more than willing to assist you in researching pancreatic cancer. I thank you for all of your support! Contact me at email@example.com.
