Bob and Mary Schindler, parents of Terri Schiavo, will be speaking at the citys third annual Priest Appreciation Dinner, at the Clock Tower Feb. 24. The Schindlers are founders of the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation, Inc., a group dedicated to ensuring the rights of disabled, elderly and vulnerable citizens against care rationing, euthanasia and medical killing. Joe Scheidler, founder of the Pro-Life Action League, will attend as an honored guest.
Fr. Brian A.T. Bovee, Rector of the Oratory of St. Mary and Priest of the Institute of Christ the King, will offer a sung traditional Latin High Mass prior to the dinner.
Co-sponsored by St. Patrick Church and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academy, the annual dinner is an expression of gratitude to the priests of the diocese. Rockford is blessed with a remarkable number of outstanding priests, says Marc Devoid, headmaster of the Academy. Especially given the present general perception of a weak clergy under fire, we ought to thank these first-rate men for their dedication, sacrifice and orthodoxy. For one evening a year, we take care of them, instead of the other way around.
Last years featured speaker was former Congressman Robert (B-1 Bob) Dornan of California.
Proceeds of the dinner will benefit the diocesan clergys retirement fund, St. Patrick Church and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Academys building fund. OLSHA is a private school founded and run by laymen, not affiliated with the Diocese of Rockford.
Dinner tickets are available for donations of $100. Corporate tables, seating eight people, can be purchased for $1,000, which includes a 1/4-page ad and tent card placed at the table. Also available is a Corporate Event Package for $10,000; this includes two tables seating eight people each, a banner thanking the corporate sponsor, and an ad on the inside front and back cover of the program, and two foursomes at the Annual Gold Outing in June 2006. Also, people may consider sponsoring a priest for a $100 donation. Make all checks payable to OLSHA.
